A 10-year-old boy from Beamsville has died in a collision on the QEW.

The boy died in hospital after a three-vehicle collision on the QEW at Tufford Road in Vineland on Thursday (March 30) around 5:30 p.m., OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said this morning (March 31).

Three other people were sent to hospital with minor injuries.

Schmidt said a 31-year-old driver from Mississauga approached slowing traffic on the QEW. She collided with an SUV driven by a 44-year-old woman from Beamsville with two 10-year-old brothers in the backseat.

That SUV was pushed into the back of another SUV driven by a 37-year-old woman from Milton, Schmidt said.

Fire crews and paramedics had to extricate one of the 10-year-old boys. He was sent to hospital where he died around 9 p.m. last night. The woman and the other boy were sent to hospital along with the 37-year-old woman from Milton. The three sustained minor injuries.

The woman from Mississauga was not injured.

All QEW Fort Erie bound lanes were closed for the collision investigation until about 1 a.m., Schmidt said. Traffic was diverting to Ontario Street in Beamsville.

Police continue to investigate and no charges have been laid yet. The roads were dry and visibility clear, Schmidt added. He said there was congestion on the road due to rush hour traffic.

“This is certainly a very tragic investigation and our hearts go out to those family members and loved ones of this 10-year-old boy,” said Schmidt.
