MiWay bus crashes into ditch on Highway 27

A dozen people were taken to hospital after a MiWay transit bus collided with another vehicle before ending up in a ditch this morning on Highway 27 at Dixon Road in Toronto, just steps east of Mississauga.

All of the injuries reported are considered to be minor, or not life threatening, Toronto Police said on Tuesday afternoon.

The driver of the MiWay bus and the driver of the other vehicle involved were among those taken to hospital, according to reports.

Toronto Police said the MiWay bus was travelling southbound on Highway 27 when it crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic and collided with a northbound vehicle just a few minutes after 11 a.m.

The bus then careened into a ditch, police said.

Ten passengers on board the bus were among those hospitalized. In total, there were 14 people on board the transit vehicle at the time of the crash, police said.

The driver of the other vehicle involved was the lone occupant of that car, according to investigators.

Part of Highway 27 in both directions was closed for the cleanup and investigation.

MiWay, the City of Mississauga’s public transit provider, said in a statement early Tuesday afternoon that the bus driver “and some passengers have been transported to hospital.”

“Late this morning, MiWay received a notification about a collision involving one of its buses. The collision took place near Highway 27 and Dixon Road in Toronto,” the statement continued, adding MiWay is cooperating fully with the police investigation.

MiWay officials added that they are closely monitoring the situation and “our thoughts are with those impacted.”
