The ‘suspicious’ fire at a Mississauga Walmart this week caused more than $10 million in damage, destroyed inventory and lost revenue leading to charges including arson, police say.
Peel Regional Police and Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services were called to the Walmart at 100 City Centre Dr. in Mississauga around 11:30 p.m. on Monday for reports of a fire inside the store, police say.
The fire broke out on the second floor and caused smoke and water damage, a fire service spokesperson told INsauga.com.
Police say the “large” blaze was contained and extinguished by fire personnel.
While no physical injuries were reported, police say the damage to the store, its inventory, and lost revenue is estimated to exceed $10 million.
Officers began investigating the fire calling the blaze “suspicious” and the scene is still being held by police as of Tuesday evening while the Ontario Fire Marshal continues the investigation.
Police say a 29-year-old male has since been arrested and charged while the investigation is ongoing.
Wyatt Diamond-Harbour, 29, of no fixed address, has been charged with arson causing damage to property and breach of probation order.
The accused was held pending a bail hearing, police said.
Peel police say the investigation is ongoing and officers are working with fire officials “and other partners to ensure a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding this incident.”
There was another fire at the store on Oct. 1 around 10:20 p.m. where fire crews were called to the Walmart. The store was evacuated as the building filled with smoke, according to a post on Reddit.
