One person is dead and over a dozen others were taken to hospital after a major crash on Highway 401 over the weekend.
Ontario Provincial Police said that at around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, officers responded to a collision involving nine vehicles.
It happened in the eastbound lanes of Highway 401 near Townline Road in the Cambridge area.
Police said a 44-year-old male driver from Kitchener was taken to a trauma centre and was later pronounced dead.
An OPP spokesperson told INsauga.com that there were 16 people taken to hospital, “some for minor injuries, some as a precaution.”
It’s not clear if that figure includes the man who died.
The spokesperson said charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing.
All eastbound lanes of Highway 401 were closed in the area following the crash. They reopened at around 10:41 p.m. on Saturday.
Any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from the area around the time of the collision was asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
