Sometime last Friday night or Saturday morning one of Burlington’s top landmarks came crashing down.

The giant donut that usually marks the location atop the Sunshine Donut Co. was knocked over by the high winds during the snowstorm.

The donut on a stick fell into the parking area of the shop on Brock Ave.

No injuries occurred and clean-up crews have been busy trying to make repairs.

As of today (March 7), the big donut can still be found sprinkle-side down in the lot.

The sign has become a recognized landmark both in Burlington and the vicinity as the shop regularly attracts people from across Southern Ontario who want a picture taken with the huge donut with the pink-coated frosting used as a backdrop.

“I couldn’t believe that it’s gone, it just disappeared,” Jen Brar told inhalton.com. “I go for the donuts but the sign makes it fun. I hope they put it back. It’s just kind of laying there now.”

The fallen donut, still attached to a poll, has brought a lot of curious onlookers during the past few days.

“It’s sad, it kind of makes this area famous (when it’s up),” said Jackie Lot who said she passes by the shop almost every day. “It didn’t look like too much damage was done. It looks salvageable.”

Indeed it is. Reports indicate the operators of the shop plan to place the famous donut back where it belongs in the days ahead.
