This year in Mississauga — and everywhere else, of course — New Year’s Day falls on Monday, January 1, 2024.

While most businesses shut down on New Year’s Day each year, there are some exceptions.

To be sure when making your plans, it’s always best to either call ahead or check your destination online for any reduced hours of operation or closures.

Here’s what’s open and closed in Mississauga on New Year’s Day (Jan. 1, 2024):

Open:

  • Square One Shopping Centre (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.)
  • Walmart Supercentre Square One
  • Whole Foods Square One
  • Some smaller grocery stores, such as Rabba
  • Select Shoppers Drug Marts (call ahead)
  • Celebration Square Ice Rink
  • Some restaurants, but call ahead to be sure

Closed:

  • Erin Mills Town Centre
  • Heartland Town Centre
  • Dixie Outlet Mall
  • Sheridan Centre
  • Meadowvale Town Centre
  • Non-essential stores at the Mississauga Chinese Centre are closed (call ahead or check online)
  • Most major grocery stores
  • Government offices (including Mississauga City Hall, which reopens on Tues. Jan. 2)
  • 311 Citizen Contact Centre
  • Banks
  • Libraries
  • Community Centres
  • LCBO
  • The Beer Store
  • Canada Post
  • Community Recycling Centres

Transit

  • MiWay will operate on a reduced holiday schedule on Jan. 1
  • GO Transit will run on a Saturday schedule on Jan. 1
  • Region of Peel TransHelp: All trips for Jan. 1 and 2 must be booked by 7 p.m. on Dec. 31. Buses will run on Jan. 1 from 6 a.m. until 1 a.m. Office is closed on Jan. 1

Garbage/recycling collection

  • no waste/recycling collection on Monday, Jan. 1. Waste will be collected one day later that week
  • All community Recycling Centres are closed on Jan. 1
