Register for summer camp, other programs in Mississauga starting next week

Registration for kids’ summer camps, spring activities and other programs opens next Tuesday (Feb. 21) in Mississauga, but residents can get an early look at what’s available this week.

“To help you get thinking of warmer days, what better way than a sneak peek at the programs, classes, activities and summer camps being offered by the City of Mississauga,” a City spokesperson said in a news release.

Starting today (Feb. 13), residents can visit the City’s website (or search Active Mississauga) to preview all spring and summer programs offered this year.

And next week, official registration for spring and summer programs/camps/activities opens both online and in person for Mississauga residents on Feb. 21 at 6 a.m.

For those who don’t live in Mississauga, they can register starting the following Monday, Feb. 27, at 6 a.m.

“Those interested are encouraged to register for both seasonal programs and summer camps as early as possible as spots are in high demand and will fill up fast,” City officials say.

For this sign-up period, library programs through June will be available. Summer library program registration will come at a later date.

Officials say recreation, culture and library programs begin the week of March 25. They’ll take place at various facilities across the city including community centres, pools, libraries, museums and the Living Arts Centre.

They add that swimming, summer fun camps, story time at the library and art classes are always enjoyable and in high demand as well.

In addition, City officials encourage people to “discover some hidden gems like Photography for Beginners and Outdoor Explorers for kids.”

Those who sign up for Outdoor Explorers will participate in nature hikes, tree and plant exploration, bird and insect observation and more.

“Explore a different theme and environmental learning piece each week through games, activities and crafts. It’s important to remember to dress for the weather as this program will be outside,” the City says.

Children from the ages of three to five years will require a parent or guardian to accompany them while those ages six to eight can participate without a parent or guardian.

In Photography for Beginners (ages 18 and up), participants will learn how to use the manual settings on a camera and the basics of photography. Explore lighting, framing, composition and more through creative projects, officials say, adding those who sign up must bring their own digital camera.

Mississauga officials urge parents to act quickly when signing their kids up for summer camp.

“Camp is one of the most popular summer programs and it’s never too early to sign your children up. The City offers a variety of camps for all ages, abilities and interests. Early registration is encouraged to avoid disappointment or long wait lists,” officials say.
