Halton Region will be moved into new COVID restrictions starting Monday.

As reported by inhalton.com earlier today, the Provincial government has announced Halton will move into the “Red” Control category that will limit social gatherings, the closure of some indoor dining, add more controls on usage of gyms, and eliminate sports games at both indoor and outdoor facilities. The Red Control category is the most restrictive in the Province’s COVID framework.

“We have to do this,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford said citing that new modelling projects the province could face up to 6,500 new cases a day in just a few weeks. “Based on current projections we could be overwhelmed with cases, hospitals could be overwhelmed, the situation is that bad. As premier I can’t accept that and I won’t accept that. We must do whatever it takes to slow the spread of this virus.”

The Premier said in the past week the situation in Ontario has changed dramatically with new cases each day now averaging more than 1,000.

“We looked hard at this and our medical experts gave us the advice that this was a necessary step,” Ford said. “A co-ordinated approach is necessary and we are here today to do that and take action to protect the health of Ontarians.”

Dr. David Williams, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer, said Halton is being moved into the Red zone because case numbers were clearly rising throughout the Region.

“In consultation with the local Medical Officers of Health we felt it was time to take immediate action to reduce the risk of the virus spreading.” Dr. Williams said. We had to make adjustments to our framework, to do what is necessary, and with that Halton falls into the new (Red) Control category.”
