It may have taken a long while due to COVID-19 restrictions, but the celebration is finally on at Dr. David R. Williams Public School in Oakville.

Almost two years after opening its doors in September 2020, the new public school will be holding its official opening ceremony on Thursday, June 9.

Staff and students can finally commemorate the school after not being able to host an in-person opening ceremony due to the pandemic.

Activities at the Oakville school, located on 3199 Post Rd., include student tours and a community open house.

“Although we technically opened our doors to students in September 2020, we have not yet been able to celebrate this very special occasion as a school community,” says Janet Ricciardelli, Principal at Dr. David R. Williams PS. “The staff and students are very excited to showcase this beautiful new school and the wonderful accomplishments we have achieved.”

The new public school is named after Canadian astronaut and Oakville resident, Dr. David Williams.

Dr. Williams has received numerous career honours and awards, including Officer of the Order of Canada in 2013, Order of Ontario in 2014 and the Award of Excellence from the College of Family Physicians of Canada in 2015.

The grand opening ceremony starts at 5 p.m. and activities will include self-guided school tours, a barbecue, musical performances and a ribbon cutting ceremony.
