Oakville’s property tax hike will be less than it was last year.

The Town’s Budget Committee is recommending a tax increase of 1.5 per cent to Council.

This comes after Oakville Mayor Rob Burton says he challenged the Budget Committee and Staff to get the proposed 1.8 per cent tax increase down to 1.6 per cent, the rate it was last year.

“Working together to make the Town more efficient, the Committee and staff and I were able to get the proposed increase down to 1.5 per cent without sacrificing any of the Town’s valued services and programs and still adding funding for resident-requested service and program and infrastructure improvement championed by their councillors to increase the Town’s livability,” Burton said in his latest update.

The 2022 budget also includes funding for the new North Park community centre and library.

Other budget funding highlights pointed out by Ward 6 Councillor and Budget Committee Chair Tom Adams include:

  • Funding for Sixth Line and Speers Rd. improvement and other significant road projects in order to keep up with growth in the community.
  • Funding for the ongoing infrastructure renewal in the community with the continued funding of the annual capital levy to keep existing roads bridges, facilities and parks in good shape for the future.
  • It accomplishes the goals of providing strong funding for traffic calming and road safety initiatives.

“The 10-year capital plan is an affordable one,” Adams said. “It’s keeping our strong reserves in place. It’s keeping our low debt positions intact and these are laudable goals and important goals for our community.

“The 2022 Budget positions us to respond to are the tremendous uncertainties around the ongoing pandemic.”

The final budget is set to go to Council for approval next Monday (Dec. 20).
