The provincial government announced Tuesday they are investing $20.8 million to build a new elementary school in North Oakville.

The new northeast school, which will be built north of Dundas St. and east of Eighth Line and be completed by 2023, will include 788 elementary student spaces, 88 new licensed childcare spaces and five new childcare rooms.

Ontario Minister of Education Stephen Lecce, Oakville North-Burlington MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos (below picture) and officials from the Halton District School Board (HDSB) made the announcement over a Zoom call.

“The new Oakville NE No. 3 Public School is great news for our community,” Triantafilopoulos said. “(A total of) 788 new student spaces and 88 new childcare spaces will provide choice and flexibility for families and new opportunities for the children of Northeast Oakville.”

The announcement is part of a $600 million investment by the province to support new school and childcare spaces.

The province has dedicated more than $565 million to create more than 19,700 new student spaces and 1,500 childcare spaces at schools across the province.

“In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have made safer schools a priority, which is why we continue to invest in modern and accessible learning spaces with improved ventilation,” said Minister Lecce. “This investment is part of our multiyear plan to build, expand, and update schools and childcare spaces across our province. It will leave a lasting legacy that benefits working families for years to come.”

Since 2018, the province has invested $96.2 million to build four new schools in Oakville North-Burlington.

This includes two public elementary schools, one Catholic elementary school, one public high school and an expansion to a French Catholic school.

The announcements will create 3,615 spaces for students and 176 childcare spaces.

“Rapid growth in north Oakville has meant too many students being bussed long distances out of their community or having to learn in portables,” Triantafilopoulos said. “Today’s new school announcement is the fourth new school in just three years that our government has delivered for our community.

“Together with our board and our community leaders, we are getting the job done.”

Margo Shuttleworth, Chair of the HDSB, is grateful for the support the province has provided to fund a new school that will be designed to accommodate the new growth in North East Oakville.

“It is wonderful to see how we are working together to reduce accommodation pressures and temporary locations for students brought about by the great population growth in communities within our region, ” Shuttleworth said.

“The HDSB hopes that the government continues to work to review and streamline the capital project approval process to build and open new schools which promotes and enhances student achievement and well-being.”

The Halton District School Board has also benefited from a provincial investment of $12.8 million for ventilation improvements and has over 1470 HEPA filter units in place.
