A recent incident of racism in a local school has prompted a donation to Crime Stoppers of Halton Inc. by the municipality.

According to police, on Dec. 7, 2020, the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) received a report regarding graffiti at George Kennedy Public School in Georgetown that included a swastika.

To assist in the investigation of hate crimes including the recent graffiti incident, Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette, directed that $2000 be used to assist.

“To put it bluntly, I am quite distressed that there have now been multiple reported incidents of racism in Halton Hills,” said Mayor Bonnette.

“This is not representative of what this community stands for and I urge people to contact Crime Stoppers if they know anything.”

Police Chief Tanner said, “There is no place for hate anywhere in the Region of Halton or in our society.”

“The Halton Regional Police Service always investigates these matters to the fullest extent possible. I am thankful to Mayor Bonnette and the members of Town Council for speaking out against these offensive incidents.”

Colin Jessome, Executive Director of the Halton Chapter of Crime stoppers was pleased with the donation and emphasized the importance of getting financial support so that they can offer an incentive for people to come forward.

“Also, having the Mayor advocate for the community to utilize Crime Stoppers to address hate crimes is a significant step in getting the message out that these are unwelcome and criminal actions,” said Jessome.
