A rapid rise in Oakville is behind a surge of new cases of COVID-19 in Halton Region today (Nov. 9), while three deaths have been reported.

Oakville is accounting for 31 of the 61 new cases across the Region.

The death toll now shows 39 people have died in Halton since the pandemic began earlier this year. The recent deaths appear to be isolated in residences for seniors in Oakville and Halton Hills.

Today’s case count shows that along with Oakville’s numbers, there are 16 new cases in Milton, 12 in Burlington and two in Halton Hills.

Overall, Halton is dealing with 434 active cases with 10 people needing to be hospitalized because of the coronavirus.

The mostly highly concentrated cases are those in communities of Oakville and Milton that neighbour Peel Region where record numbers have been reported that past several days.

Halton is also dealing with what it considers outbreaks at two schools, St. Dominic and St. Gregory the Great Catholic Elementary Schools in Oakville. Each school has two confirmed cases and are considered outbreaks because of how the virus has spread.

There are also three ongoing outbreaks at facilities for seniors in the Region.

The Village of Tansley Woods in Burlington has 45 cases and seven deaths since an outbreak there on October 3. Chartwell Waterford in Oakville has 52 cases since October 13 leading to four deaths. Amica Georgetown has 18 cases and two deaths since October 19.

Ontario is reporting 1,242 new cases of COVID-19 today, and 12 deaths across the province.

Health Minister Christine Elliott says there are 483 new cases in Toronto, 279 in Peel Region, 107 in York Region, 74 in Ottawa and 57 in Hamilton.

The province says there are 84 people in intensive care, with 54 on ventilators.
