Former Halton Hills Mayor Rick Bonnette was honoured for his 40 years of public service at Monday’s council meeting.

Town council passed a resolution renaming the community hall at the Acton Arena and Community Centre after him.

Bonnette spent 40 years representing the people of Halton Hills, including 19 as mayor, and will consult with staff before the final name of the room is chosen.

The motion, put forward by councillor Clark Somerville, mentioned Bonnette’s many accomplishments during his time in office, including leading the charge against proposals to build a 400 series highway through town, saving the Georgetown Hospital and gaining international recognition for his work in speaking out against the “Buy American” movement.

In addition, Bonnette received Ontario’s Long Standing Service Award in 2008 and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.
