Local police services, including here in Oakville and Halton Region, are joining together to help tackle an alarming rise in carjacking incidents.

The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) and forces in the Greater Toronto Area have combined resources and established a task force to further co-ordinate law enforcement efforts in combating these crimes.

Carjackings are often violent, affecting not only the victim but the whole community.

Police believe a collaborative approach is better to target the criminals as well as the organized criminal groups behind the carjackings.

“Individuals involved in carjackings target high-end vehicles,” said Halton police in a press release. “HRPS wants to remind members of the community to be cognizant of your surroundings while entering/exiting your vehicle and while driving.

“If you find yourself a victim of a carjacking, protect yourself and do not try to fight with the suspects. Get to a safe place and call 911.

Participating services in the task force along with HRPS include York Regional Police, the Toronto Police Service, Peel Regional Police, the Ontario Provincial Police, and the Durham Regional Police Service, supported by Criminal Intelligence Service Ontario.
