Soundbites is a free two day event held at Mississauga’s Celebration Square that will highlight food, music and flicks on September 5 and 6.

The festivities for Soundbites include a joint partnership between AwesTRUCK and Food Truck Eats to host one of the largest food truck events in Ontario. In addition to the food truck explosion, there is also a concert performance by the legendary American hip hop trio De La Soul and Mississauga’s first Hip Hop Karaoke (HHK).

AwesTRUCK and Food Truck Eats have partnered up to bring Mississauga one of the largest food truck events in Ontario. It will include the third annual Ontario Food Truck Awards and a line up of 30 food trucks. The food truck awards will be in the following categories: Best Pop-up, Best Concept, Best New Truck, Best Menu Item, Best Graphics, Road Warrior, and People’s Choice.

Grammy award winning De La Soul is known for their unique, and jazzy hip hop style, often referred to as alternative rap, and according to Rolling Stone magazine, Del La Soul “paved the way for a steady stream of adventurous “alternative” rap groups (A Tribe Called Quest, P.M. Dawn, Basehead, and Digable Planets).”

De La Soul has two gold and one platinum record and has sold over 5 million albums in the US. The late 80’s was when the hit single “Me Myself and I” exploded, and a time when Kangol hats, and big gold chain necklaces were the gear of choice.

HHK originated in New York City in 2004 by founders J.New, DJ Wex and Digs and renowned hip hop artists such as Diamond D and Big Daddy Kane would show up. The popularity grew exponentially producing chapters around the world – the Toronto chapter was born in 2009. It started in a small venue called The Boat located in Kensington Market and has since outgrown the space and moved to Revival in Little Italy.

The performances at HHK are unlike your typical karaoke bar, there are no monitors displaying the bouncy ball, and words to the tracks – most know the lyrics to the classic hip hop tracks and perform it to digital instrumental versions of it. The event attracts underground talent who can spit out rhymes on a mic like it was nobody’s business.

Friday night’s event
will also include a double-bill feature with old school flicks Goonies at 7 pm and Gremlins at 9 pm.
