Burlington fire damage blaze

A chemical leak in Burlington this morning (March 9) has shut down a food plant and sent 15 workers to the hospital.

Reports indicate the ammonia leak occurred after 11 a.m. at Sofina Foods at 821 Appleby Line, which also houses Fearmans Pork.

Firefighters who arrived on the scene quickly evacuated the complex and sent those who were feeling ill to the hospital. The condition of the 15 people has not been determined, but initial reports indicate their hospitalization is for precautionary reasons.

Other workers have been treated at the scene, while others are being escorted off the premises.

The Ministry of Labour is at the scene investigating, as is the Burlington Fire Department.

For the past several years, Fearmans has been the target of several protests by animal rights activists.

Updates are expected throughout the day.
