Burlington likely to see new riding in time for next federal election

A federal commission has adjusted the election boundaries for Burlington which could come into effect in time for the next election if further approvals are given.
The final report released by the Federal Electoral Boundary Redistribution Commission for Ontario shows that the riding of “Burlington” will remain intact and stretch from the municipal borders of Hamilton to the west and Oakville to the east and zigzag along the top end across sections of Dundas St., Upper Middle Rd. and the QEW.
Initial plans from the commission called for changes that would have excluded the neighbourhoods of Brant Hills, Tyandaga and Elizabeth Gardens from this riding but that is no longer the case.
“There were strong objections to the Commission’s initial proposal as it impacted the City of Burlington,” comments in the report state, adding that changes to the ridings in Oakville will allow “Burlington’ to remain as it is.
Karina Gould, current MP for the riding of “Burlington” said she was pleased with the Commission’s decision.
“The federal riding of Burlington will keep our riding name…we were heard,” Gould announced through social media. “Thank you to everyone who wrote to me, to the Commission, and encouraged others in the community to do so. When we come together, we can make our voices heard.”

The biggest change will come in the new riding of “Burlington North – Milton West” which essentially replaces the old riding of “Oakville North – Burlington”.
This new riding will reach from the top boundary of the “Burlington” riding up through the west part of Milton and north to Guelph/Eramosa. Burlington will make up 49 per cent of the population of this riding.
The Commission’s final report will have to go before Members of Parliament before its becomes official.
