Burlington fast-tracks construction of long-term care facility

Burlington is speeding up the process needed to create a new long-term care facility.
Councillors approved the plan this week that prioritizes the development application by Better Life Retirement Residences at 4103 Palladium Way.
Although council approved the plan to get the facility built, a motion by Ward 6 Councillor Angelo Bentivegna also stressed the need to get the project started to meet deadlines set out for this summer by the Ontario government for funds that will help with construction.
A memo presented at the council meeting presented by Bentivegna outlined the need to get the project moving:
“Residents are asking for more retirement homes and long-term care facilities be available across the city so that they can spend the later years of their lives in Burlington, and to relocate family members to these facilities so that they are closer to them. By expediting the review of the submitted applications, staff will prioritize 4103 Palladium Way and work with the developer to meet the deadlines set by the provincial government and protect the funding.”
When built, the facility will consist of two buildings, a five-story structure that will consist f 256 long-term care (LTC) beds and a six-story 115-unit retirement home. The LTC facility will include the relocation of 93 beds from Maple Villa LTC facility.

Mayor Marianne Meed Ward said councillors recognize the need for more long-term care accommodations in Burlington.
“Directing staff to prioritize this file helps protect provincial funding and get shovels in the ground,” she said.
