Roads, roads, road — infrastructure is taking top spot in Burlington, where city council approved its 10-year $688 million capital budget.

It includes a 2018 capital budget of $68.6 million.

Approval was made at the Dec. 11 council meeting.

Seventy nine per cent of the 10-year capital budget will be invested in renewing Burlington’s aging infrastructure in accordance with the city’s Asset Management Plan.

“The strong focus on infrastructure renewal projects in the 2018 capital budget reflects the city’s commitment to both the Asset Management Plan and the 25-year Strategic Plan,” said Burlington Mayor Rick Goldring.

“The Asset Management Plan provides the framework to help the city make the best possible decisions regarding the renewal and replacement of infrastructure assets while minimizing risk and cost to taxpayers and maximizing service delivery.”

The spending breakdown for the 2018 capital budget of $68.6 million includes:

  • $32 million, the largest component, for roads.
  • $11.5 million for facilities and buildings.
  • $8.1 million for parks and open spaces.
  • $7.1 million in storm water management.
  • $6.1 million towards fleet vehicles and equipment.
  • $1.8 million for information technology.
  • $1.4 million for local boards (Burlington Public Library, Burlington Performing Arts Centre, Art Gallery of Burlington, Burlington Museums).
  • $630,000 in parking.

The 2018 capital budget “ensures the city is investing in our existing infrastructure to continue to deliver the high quality services that residents depend on while providing funds for new initiatives that deliver on the city’s 25-year Strategic Plan and enhance the quality of life in the city,” said director of finance Joan Ford.
