A building in downtown Port Perry was “significantly damaged” after a driver suffered a medical episode and crashed into it early Saturday morning.

Durham Police say a 63-year-old man was driving a grey Toyota Sienna van in the parking lot of a commercial building at 1869 Scugog Street just before 7 a.m. Saturday when he suffered a medical episode, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. The vehicle struck the building, which contains a pizza shop among other businesses, causing approximately $100,000 in damage.

Durham Police’s Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene “due to the severity of the structural damage.” This collision is still under investigation.
