A suspected meat thief who made off with $300 worth of steak and chicken breast from a Burlington grocery store is being sought by Halton police.

“She picked up a cart, went straight to the meat department,” said Const. Naresh Dabas from the District Response Unit which is focusing on retail crime as Halton police are cracking down on shoplifting across the region.

The alleged incident took place at Metro at 2010 Appleby Line on Oct. 4  at 7:57 p.m.

“It doesn’t appear to be a one-off because of the amount that’s involved,” Dabas said.

“She knew exactly what she wanted.”

The woman was allegedly filling up the cart with meat, and even threw a case of pop on top.

She then walked past the cash register and left the store “without making any attempts to pay,” said Dabas.

The suspect was alone.

“We haven’t seen her picture before,” said Dabas.

“I don’t know if she just hasn’t gotten caught.”

But the quantity of meat has him concerned.

When meat is lifted, “usually they’ll grab two packets of meat and then they’ll leave,” he said.

A similar case last summer saw two suspects making off with prime rib and steak.

The suspect stands about 5-foot-8 with a heavy build, weighing 250 pounds. She has dark hair and was wearing a light blue long-sleeved shirt, black pants, and shoes.
